"Happy New Year! Resolutions? Think realistic goals instead. Pick one career-related and one personal goal. That is how you approach worklife balance; one goal, one priority at a time." -Romella
Lots of confusion about what worklife balance actually means.
Many who are bashing the notion took it literally. There will be a natural ebb and flow. Sometimes work must take the forefront (e.g., we all need food and shelter) and sometimes your personal life (e.g., getting married, having a baby, taking care of a sick parent, etc.) takes the stage. Balance is not an end state, but what you strive for. Work to live and live to work. It is and, not or. Work + Life = Balance. Not or.
Interesting post...You might find it a bit brash, but it is interesting.

Workers need help coping? Yep. Read this article from the Miami Herald. http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/12/28/1991979/workers-need-help-to-cope-with.html
Allison Linn on Life Inc. said that worklife balance probably didn't mean much in 2010.

She's right that those "lucky" enough to have jobs worked hard and ran at full speed. But, worklife balance always matters because nobody can operate on tilt forever. And if these hardworking employees don't feel appreciated, neigh respected by their employers, they will turnover the first half-a-chance they get. The economy is bad now and probably 2011 will be rough, but the tide will turn. Organizations that neglect their stars do so at their own peril.

Business Exchange has a good blog on worklife balance. http://bx.businessweek.com/work-life-balance/blogs/
Not scientific, but Facebook did a user's poll about their relationships and there are a lot of break ups going on now...The holidays are stressful. These breakups show the results of life out of balance. People re-evaluate their lives around the holidays to get ready for new, hopefully better year. This conference on worklife balance will help you take stock.
Sedate State was out greeting people at Metro Center for this evening's rush. It was a rush, as many frazzled employees raced into the subway to get out of the cold. Bad weather days were made for telework. The Federal Government is urging agencies to expand the use of flexiplace and other work arrangements. Not only does it save employees time, but it saves money.
Romella will be visiting other stations in the near future, chatting with folks about their work, lives, and how they seek to achieve balance.
Research has shown that having happy, healthy, and engaged workers is good for an organization's balance sheet.
APA has created a database of research on what makes for a healthy work environment via its Psychologically Healthy Workplace Program. www.phwa.org
"Worklife balance really is about successfully joining two distinct areas of life in a harmonious way. It is more than offering programs at work to help employees manage their private lives; there are things that must be done to the work itself that will enable employees to increase their productivity, limit their time at work, while enjoying their work more. This is what Work + Life = Balance means. We need meaningful work to be happy, and we need meaning beyond work to be happy."

Idea: Small business owners can opt for interns to help get things done. Pay a small stipend at end of a three-month, part-time internship. The student gets experience and you get a help until you can afford to hire another full-time employee.
